چکیده

Conventional open netcage systems for salmon aquaculture are under scrutiny and criticism partially because they are believed to generate adverse environmental impacts on other resource users and the surrounding environment. One alternative to preventing or minimizing these impacts is to use enclosed systems. Experience indicates that these enclosed systems are technically feasible and environmentally promising, but they are economically demanding because of high capital and operating costs. Therefore, an economic analysis of open netcage and sea-bag systems for salmon aquaculture was conducted to examine the profitability of salmon aquaculture operations between these two systems. The study shows that netcage systems are more financially profitable than sea-bag systems when environmental costs are either not or only partially considered. Sea-bag systems can be financially profitable only when they produce fish that achieve a price premium. Sensitivity analyses reveal that market price has the most important impact on the profitability of both systems; changes in discount rates, fish density, feed costs, and environmental costs also have major impacts on the profitability of netcage systems; while changes in the length of the growth cycle, survival rate and feed conversion ratio have minor impacts on the profitability of sea-bag systems.

Cost factor analysis of Caspian salmon (Salmo trutta caspius Kessleri, 1877) fingerling production and release in Iran

Iran contributes to the stock enhancement of several economically valuable fish species, including the Caspian salmon, S. trutta caspius, by producing and releasing millions of fingerlings into the sea. This work was conducted to determine the production costs of the Caspian salmon fingerlings in the years 2002 and 2003. For this purpose, a questionnaire was prepared and filled in by an expert ...

NOTES Reproduction of Aquaculture Atlantic Salmon in a Controlled Stream Channel on Vancouver Island, British Columbia

—Sightings and captures of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar that have escaped from aquaculture facilities have become common in coastal British Columbia, Canada. A lack of empirical data has prevented the forecast of what effects may result from the presence of this species in the Pacific Northwest. A first step towards this objective is to evaluate the spawning potential of escaped Atlantic salmon....

Physiological consequences of the salmon louse (Lepeophtheirus salmonis) on juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha): implications for wild salmon ecology and management, and for salmon aquaculture.

Pink salmon, Oncorhynchus gorbuscha, are the most abundant wild salmon species and are thought of as an indicator of ecosystem health. The salmon louse, Lepeophtheirus salmonis, is endemic to pink salmon habitat but these ectoparasites have been implicated in reducing local pink salmon populations in the Broughton Archipelago, British Columbia. This allegation arose largely because juvenile pin...
